When the Baby Is Here and the Joy Hasn't Come
You expected to be tired. You didn't expect to feel this flat. Maybe you go through the motions of feeds and naps and visitors while feeling far away from all of it. Maybe you cry in the car, or not at all. Maybe the hardest part is the voice telling you that you should be happier than this, and that something must be wrong with you.
At Mother Nurture Therapy Group, we see postpartum depression for what it is: a common, treatable condition, not a measure of how much you love your baby or how good a parent you are. It often comes from a mix of hormonal shifts, sleep loss, a hard birth or pregnancy, old wounds, and too little support. Therapy gives you a place to set down the shame and start feeling better, with someone who specializes in exactly this.
Postpartum depression looks different for everyone.
You might notice
Sadness, emptiness, or tears that come out of nowhere
Feeling numb or flat, even in moments you expected to treasure
Not feeling the bond you hoped for with your baby
Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
Exhaustion that rest doesn't touch
A hair-trigger temper or rage that surprises you
Guilt, shame, or a constant sense that you're failing
Pulling away from your partner, friends, or family
Postpartum depression can put distance between you and the life in front of you. With the right support, your life can begin to feel full again.
how we can help
We offer specialized, unhurried care for postpartum depression.
Recovery from postpartum depression usually starts small: a few better hours, then a few better days. We focus first on what will make this week more manageable, and then on what this season has stirred up underneath.
In the early sessions, we build a plan around your real life: protecting the sleep you can get, small steps back toward things that feel like you, and practical ways to ask for and accept help. CBT-informed tools help you catch the harsh, all-or-nothing thoughts depression feeds on and answer them with something truer.
As things steady, we look at the bigger picture with attachment-based and psychodynamic therapy: your expectations of motherhood, your own early experiences, and the support (or lack of it) around you. If a difficult birth, a NICU stay, or an earlier loss is part of the story, we can address that too, including with EMDR. Partners are welcome to join some sessions, and with your consent we're glad to coordinate with your OB, midwife, pediatrician, or a perinatal psychiatrist if medication is part of your plan.

FAQs
-
The baby blues are common in the first two weeks after birth: mood swings, tearfulness, and feeling overwhelmed that ease on their own. Postpartum depression lasts longer than two weeks, tends to feel heavier, and gets in the way of daily life. If you're not sure which one you're dealing with, a free consultation can help.
-
It can begin during pregnancy or any time in the first year after birth, not only in the first few weeks. Some people first notice symptoms months later, around weaning or returning to work.
-
Very common. As many as 1 in 7 mothers experience postpartum depression, and many more have symptoms that never get named. It can happen after a first baby or a third, and with or without a history of depression.
-
For some people it lifts with time, but for many it lingers for months and affects sleep, relationships, and bonding along the way. Support usually helps it ease sooner, and you don't have to wait until it's severe to reach out.
-
Many people improve with therapy alone, especially when they start early. For moderate or severe depression, therapy combined with medication is often most effective. With your consent, we coordinate with your doctor or refer you to a perinatal psychiatrist.
-
Yes. Research suggests about 1 in 10 new fathers experience depression after a baby arrives, and non-birthing partners of any gender can be affected. We see partners individually and as a couple.
-
Call or text 988 or go to the nearest emergency room right away. These thoughts are a sign of serious depression, not who you are, and they are treatable with the right care.
